MISSION TRIP REPORT – CAMP PENUEL, COSTA RICA
Lutheran High’s 8th annual mission trip has been completed and it was another amazing experience!  Those participating were: Jeffrey Alvarez, Hannah Cassanova, Jasmine Drew, Ethan Ortiz, Jannely Perez, Harley Rihner, Dylan Schmidt, Trenton Williams and faculty sponsors Joseph Taylor and Mitzi Loughmiller.
While in Costa Rica the Mission Team had the opportunity to minister 120 Costa Rican youth between the ages of 7 – 11.  The team helped lead three camps – a day camp for local children and then two three-day camps for youth from the San Jose area.  The team really enjoyed interacting with the Costa Rican camp staff and had numerous opportunities to practice their Spanish. The group also helped with day-to-day camp activities – washing dishes, clean-up, bible dramas, games with the campers, and other camp sessions – crafts, nature walks, swimming, horse rides, etc.  On our final night at camp both the LHS students and the Costa Rican staff had nothing but kind words to say to one another.  The most common word shared was “family.”  Camp Penuel Directors, Paul and Thelma Bernhagen, offered their sincere thanks to our group and gave positive feedback to all of them.  Please seek out our team members to ask them about their individual experiences!
A special thanks to those families who donated items and money toward the purchase of items that could be shared with the children of Costa Rica.  Below is a summary of how the items were used:
  • A gift bag for each local student that included – a children’s book in English, stickers, pencils and erasers
  • A soccer ball and volleyball for each of the two local schools (4 more balls were donated to Camp Penuel)
  • Items for gift bags on the last day of camp for all campers – a special thanks to a First English member who donated 75 – 80 Disney beanie babies (they were a huge hit with the first San Jose group)
  • Extra items were left for future groups of campers (including an upcoming English camp)
  • Gently used children’s clothes for one of the San Jose missions
